OUT of OSTRALE O18 Valletta (European Capital of Culture)

Invitation: Found ă mentalism

As part of the new OSTRALE Biennale concept, we will be performing from May to July 2018 as part of the "European Capital of Culture Valletta 2018" at the "St. James's Cavalier" museum, the "German Maltese Circle" and "Valletta Contemporary" in Malta.

Found ă mentalism II is inspired by Picasso's words about his famous work Guernica;

"[...] an artist who lives by and deals with spiritual values cannot remain indifferent in the face of a conflict in which the highest values of humanity and civilisation are at stake."

With this exhibition, we aim to invite reflection and change, and to ensure that art carries forward the spirit of Picasso's words; we cannot be anything but indifferent to the conflicts and struggles around us. Through this project, we propose a perspective and a possibility for a more positive future.

This stance heralds the growth of a diverse cultural, political and economic European society. Global conflicts and increasing migration flows offer art the opportunity to counter the potential for violence and to embrace cultural diversity.

Found ă mentalism II proposes a journey through a European culture that is both traditional and diverse. In doing so, we explore the question of whether art acts as a form of mutual support between these different cultures and can help resolve current social crises.
Andrea Hilger, Antka Hofmann, Co-curators, OSTRALE

The contemporary art scene in Malta is becoming increasingly dynamic and diverse. The collaboration between OSTRALE and Spazju Kreattiv promotes international exchange, aims to strengthen cooperation and create more opportunities for artistic exhibitions. By setting high standards for international contemporary art, growth within the artistic community is fostered, thereby creating access to a wider audience.
Toni Sant, Spazju Kreattiv, Artistic Director

Found ă mentalism II is inspired by Picasso's words about his famous Guernica; "[...] "Artists who live and work with spiritual values cannot and should not remain indifferent to a conflict in which the highest values of humanity and civilization are at stake."

Through the exhibition we invite you to reflect and get new impressions about this topic just to ensure that art will carry on the spirit of Picasso's words. Cause we shouldn´t be indifferent to all the conflicts and struggles around us. Through the project, we suggest perspectives and possibilities for a better future.

Found ă mentalism II heralds the growth of a diverse cultural, political and economic European society. Global conflicts and increasing migration flows provide an opportunity for art, to act against potential violence and embrace cultural diversity.

The issue proposes a journey through a European culture, which is common and diverse at once. We are asking if art is able to act as a mutual support between these diverse cultures, and if this provide a remedy for current societal crisis.

Andrea Hilger, Antka Hofman, Co-curators, OSTRALE

The contemporary art scene in Malta gets more and more dynamic and diverse. Exchanges such as the collaboration between the OSTRALE and Spazju Kreattiv serve the intercultural exchange, reinforce collaborations and encourage the growth of the artistic community, while providing further opportunities for broader audiences to access contemporary art on an international level.

"found a mentalism I & II" under the curation of Antka Hofmann and Andrea Hilger for Fondazzjoni Kreattività:

One could see, the confrontation of these two exhibitions and artists from around the globe that were selected by the OSTRALE curators, in the light of the words of the artist Pablo Picasso about "Guernica" (1937): "It is my wish to remind you that I was always convinced and am still convinced, that an artist who lives and works with spiritual values cannot behave indifferently when faced with a conflict in which the highest values of humanity and civilization are at risk." Because what we want to achieve are art rooms, created through and with the artists' works, inviting to think and create change in the sense of Picassos' words anything but indifferent to the current state of society. Which perspectives for the future are provided through the examination of the past?
Our present age is a time of turmoil, marked by the increasing presence of terrifying "isms", it confronts us with open questions and missing answers. Is art the mediator we need in our societies, acting as the conscious confrontation and collaboration of tradition and modernity and providing support in the search of peaceful resolutions? Can it be a supporting power for the development of the European cultural space?

In our art project "found ǎ mentalism" we propose a journey through the growth of a young political and economic society to tackle the question how our shared heritage is assembled. We focus on the topics Mediterranean Sea - "Conflict and Exile", standing for the global situation of war and displacement. Beyond this and through the confrontation of art works and artists we present a myriad of opportunities provided through cultural diversity, mutual understanding and by finding togetherness.
