GG19
- The Workshop

Themes of the exceptional film project by the Berlin director and producer Harald Siebler
are the basic human rights, which are quoted in the first 19 articles of the German
constitution. Under the patronage of the former federal minister of justice, Mrs. Brigitte
Zypries, the film takes a close look at the relation between the basic rights and its people.

The abstract wording of law of the 19 first articles of the federal foundation have been
transformed by 25 authors into 19 individual screenplays. 19 short film chapters add up to
one film and yet still each of the chapters produces its own significant impact.

The participation of prominent German actors like Katharina Thalbach, Kurt Krömer, Anna
Loos, Max Riemelt etc. makes it possible, to gain a playful access to basic rights.
Understood basic human needs - the inviolability of dignity, freedom of press, inviolability
of the home etc. - receive a present background.

'GG 19 - The Workshop' is made for pupils, trainees and students and it is also easily
adaptable for other target groups. The film GG 19 offers an emotional and optical intense access to the legal basic principles of social life.

Inspired by the 19 short-film-chapters the workshop offers possibilities, to find creative
expressions for individual thoughts and experiences, hopes and doubts.
Possible means of expression are music / poetry, theatre, design, creative authoring,
mixed media collages / web and film.

Basic module: Introduction / Film / Conversation
Background for each workshop is a moderated conversation, where the participants get
introduced to the historic and juristic principles of the federal constitution of Germany.
After the films have been sighted, a conversation about what has been seen and
experienced leeds on to the level of individual points of views and associated thoughts.

Music Poetry
Finding simple, clear and strong words. Expressing thoughts, emotions and experiences
authentically in lyrics. Letting lyrics and music, words and melodies quarrel with each
other. Finding a personal statement and mood with just a few words inspired by sound.
Music as a medium inspires a more open, abstract, but still intentional use of the own
language by the participants. Individual experiences start to sound in songs.

Unaffected by the grade of their musical education, the participants get involved in the
realization of the music. Own instruments are welcome.

Starting from a given refrain, individual lyrics are developed according to the different
personal point of views to the chosen GG 19 short film.

Theatre
Rehearsing everyday life with the never ending means of theatre to be prepared for
working life. The own body language along with the strength of the voice will be looked at
closely concerning its effect towards a position in a team.

The basic rules of theatre will be experienced by exercising roles without the use of the
voice. Doing so, scenes concerning one basic right are going to be developed. Of great
importance here is the personal attitude towards basic rights as it has great influence on
the dramatic contents of the scenes. Finally the scenes are presented to a audience.
This scenic experience of a role on stage, invites to experiments with the own possibilities,
the impact of basic rights are felt live on stage.

Design
Design is the process of shaping thus developing, modifying or producing an object or a
mental construction, whereby it gains a specific appearance.

In this sense participants will design print media, especially posters and small brochures,
according to a chosen short film / basic right. Image and Word have to be found and
brought to the point, in order to transform an obviously abstract concern into a concise
appearance, which can be generally understood as a image / word message.

Besides simple, classical, graphical techniques, in particular photography will be used as a
means of illustration. As the basis for their design, participants are to photographically
'get a own picture' of themselves and their immediate surrounding.
The (digital) results can optionally be printed and presented in an exhibition.

Film / Video
The film and its 19 individual approaches to the basic rights will nourish new ideas for own
short films about one chosen basic right. It can stimulate subjective expression,
capabilities in language, image, movement and sound.

The passive level of mere watching will be exchanged against an active an conscious
interaction with images and language by producing a new and own film.
Results of all modules - music, texts, acting etc. - can be part of film production.
One possible result of the workshop can be a professionally produced DVD with all video
results of the participants also including a documentary of the production.

The films will be shot on MiniDV material.

Mixed Media Collages / Web
The internet has advanced within a short period to a standardized media for the masses.
Most of the popular websites vary marginally in structure and function and the habits of
users have been constantly conditioned.

But what happens if these 'rules' and 'standards' are left behind and creative disputes with
regards to the content takes place instead?

Using all possible mass media (internet / newspaper / TV etc.) participants can develop
own websites using artistic means, thus 'translating' their individual experiences and
thoughts concerning a chosen GG 19 short film / basic right.

Finally images, texts and sounds are combined to one multimedia based website, that
consciously places itself at a distance from the mainstream. This will be reached by
reducing the available means to a minimum, which allows a glance to the essential. A new
aesthetical web experience will be made that also provokes a medially and artistically
influenced new attitude toward basic rights.

The work of the participants will afterwards be presented in a web exhibition.
Condition: basics HTML and image editing, computer

Computers should be available according to the numbers of participants, with the ideally
installed programs 'Dreamweaver' and 'Photoshop'.

Creative Writing
"First, I do not sit down at my desk to put into verse something that is already clear in my
mind. If it were clear in my mind, I should have no incentive or need to write about it...we
do not write in order to be understood; but we write in order to understand."
C. Day Lewis in The Poetic Image

How can a thought, a sensation or a remembrance be transformed into a narrative text?
How can one activate memory and fantasy? How do you start a story? How can you create
a sensuous and profound narration, that others are interested in reading?

Creative, vivid, colorful and interesting writing is learnable. Writing is part of human nature
and not a calling or a rare talent.

This workshop teaches how to overcome a writer’s block, find playful ways to access
writing abilities and enables the participants, to a dispute about basic rights and society
with own words and text forms.

Impressions Workshop Rooms

The rooms für the cultural education activities of the OSTRALE'010 are sited directly on the OSTRALE-premises in a historic part of the 100 year old group of slaughterhouse-buildings.

The GG 19 - workshops will take place in the former menial chambers. These are connected to each othet by doors so that the separate workshop groups can work for themselves, but if possible can also exchange experiences and ideas. The widely spread surrounding outdoor area will also be used for example by the theater and film workshops.

In the stables next door to the menial chambers the audience's workhop will open it's doors to the public through ot the three weeks of the OSTRALE'010. Here the own creative handling with material can be experimented with, so that finally the stable itself will be art created by the visitors. The weekly results of the GG 19 workshops will als o take place in the stable.
