Hung Yun-Ting receives the Public Award of the OSTRALE’09
The Taiwanese artist Hung Yun-Ting is honoured with the Ostale`09 Public Award. More than 11.000 visitors were enchanted by the poetic installation which was displayed in the Direktorenvilla. In a small, completely dark room 80 blue-luminous bulbs dangled from the ceiling, each bulb shelters one tiny fantastic being.
An interview by Matthias Hahndorf.
You are awarded for your work „Xiao Xing Xing - Sternchen“ with the Public Award of the OSTRALE`09. Do you feel honoured?
I did participate in the festival OSTRALE`09 for the first time and I thank you for the Award. Yes, I feel very honoured.
What did fascinate the audience about your work, do you have an idea?
My work sends out an mysterious atmosphere. The viewer can combine the imaginary miniature of the imaginary being and the real world through my work.
What did inspire you and what meaning beares your work?
XIAO XING XING means the starlet. In Taiwan we have a children´s song about the star: twinkle, twinkle, bright, bright. Starlets are widespread in the sky. They are dangled and shine in the sky. They look like many small eyes...
That song shows that the image changes through the very mirrow of fantasy. But you have to cross the point of absurdity and pass logic. Xiao Xing Xing consists of about 80 bulbs which dangle from the ceiling in the darkness like a star glimmering.
The attention turns to: „The self-evident existence of unnatural nature“. The mini-animal figures are developed or mutated in the picture and placed within the bulb finally. In the miniature of the imaginary being you discover the point of view about the culture-landscape of the viewer that possibly decodes our image of life. And when you view the bulbs intensively, don`t you hold already a loupe in your hand? Because the attention itself is a magnifying glass. It lets you step into the miniature and immediately pictures start to swarm, to grow, to pass off. These pictures, you see it immediately, don`t conform reality anymore but open a new world.
Did have the room in which "Xiao Xing Xing - starlets" was displayed any influence on your work?
The room worked incredible with my work.
How did you experience the exhibition and the members of staff?
The staff of the OSTRALE was kind. We discussed techniques of work during the installation. We did help each other when there came up any problems.
